The Durban Ski-Boat Club gives the couta season as January to June. Fish can turn up outside those months, so ask operators what recent trips have caught.
How Couta Are Caught
- Slow trolling. Live bait is towed slowly over reefs and along the backline.
- Lures. Spoons and plugs are trolled when bait is scarce.
- Sharp teeth. Couta bite through line, so the crew use wire traces.
- Bycatch. Natal snoek, bonito and tuna are often caught on the same trips.

Couta is the local name for king mackerel, also called barracuda in KZN. It is a fast, toothy game fish that is good to eat.

Yes. The crew rig the tackle and handle the bait. Backline trips stay close to shore.
