Target Species
- Offshore, mainly summer. Dorado, kingfish, queenfish, bonito, couta and yellowfin, plus reef fish.
- Lagoon. Grunter, kob, river snapper, stumpnose, rockcod and shad.
- Couta. The local ski-boat club runs an autumn couta competition.
Launching Through the Mouth
Boats are inspected by the uMlalazi ski-boat club, need a skipper's licence and must be registered with Ezemvelo, and life jackets must be worn at all times. A club permit is needed to go through the mouth. Your charter operator handles this.
uThukela Marine Protected Area
The coast from just north of Tinley Manor into Zululand is part of the uThukela MPA. Some zones are closed to all fishing. In the offshore pelagic zone only gamefish such as tuna, couta, dorado, billfish and garrick may be caught, with no bottom fishing or anchoring. Fishing from a boat is not allowed between sunset and sunrise in the controlled zones, and sharks may not be targeted. Launching is only allowed at designated sites. Your skipper knows the zones.

- Every angler needs their own recreational fishing permit, sold at Post Offices and online by the DFFE. Some operators include it, most do not.
- Bring your own drinks and snacks, sunscreen, a hat and a cooler box with ice.
